Anxiety in the workplace is counterproductive and uncivil.
In the workplace the huge and unnecessary levels of “I must win at any cost,” rates up there with stupidity, incivility and plain ugliness. It destroys otherwise willing productivity of must people and reduces their thoughtful commitment to work. Carping, bitching, fear of losing, fear of listening, mandate to win, and fear of independent thought — all create an anxiety at most workplaces that is inefficient and uncivil.
There are some better approaches, that apparently don’t mandate being mean and stupid to be powerful. See an interesting review of some positive interaction tactics in this article: New York Times 6-21-15.
