I thought Botswana was a rather civil place, having taken my impressions from The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. I was disappointed to learn that one one the world’s great social thinkers and humanitarians was “banned from Botswana.” The author of a world renowned book on horses and his autistic son, he had ventured into conflict with the diamond mining companies who were taking over lands granted legally to the Bushmen. He took the Bushmen’s claim to the United Nations. The tribe won their claim and he, as a result, was banned from Botswana. But the resettlement continues in spite of the U.N., as described in Botswana Bushmen.
